I thought growin' up would take a bit longer / Still thinking 'bout fairy tales and slaying childhood monsters / And how much you needed me back when you were younger / I was caught up in the terrible twos, getting through the homework due / I didn't think to think one day I'd miss these days with you / But just like that, I’m lookin' back on 18 years of chaos in a flash / Without all that, I'm down to digging through the memories in this stack of things we saved up, all the storybooks they made up, cards with crayon hearts signed "I love you Mom and Dad" / Just like that / I thought when this moment came, I'd be a bit stronger / Not thinking 'bout the things I'd say, the advice I have to offer / Value the time you have, it's full of life you can't recover / Don’t get caught up in the day to day / Say all the things you mean to say / You'll never even think how quickly everything will change / But just like that, you're lookin' back on 18 years of chaos in a flash / Without all that, you're down to digging through the memories in this stack of things you saved up, all the storybooks they made up, cards with crayon hearts signed "I love you Mom and Dad" / Just like that / You'll find the days are long but the years are short / No one likes this goodbye part / But I wouldn't change a thing / I'd do anything to feel it all again / But just like that, I'm lookin' back on 18 years of chaos in a flash / Without all that, I'm down to digging through the memories in this stack of things we saved up, all the storybooks they made up, cards with crayon hearts signed "I love you Mom and Dad" / Just like that / Just like that / They grow up just like that and I’d go back / Just like that / Just like that

THE STORY BEHIND “JUST LIKE THAT”

Friends! I’m so excited to share with you a little project that we have been working on during quarantine! Back in 2017, I met a really special lady named Jillian in the lobby of BMI. Our paths crossed that day purely by the Lord’s arrangement and our friendship began. We started writing in Nashville and she helped this Kentucky girl learn quite a bit about the art of songwriting and the music industry.

Eventually, we got together with a very talented artist named Brett Westgrove. (Most nights you can find him lighting up Nashville’s Broadway stages.) This might have been our second or third song that we worked on together. It started from the idea that a lot of moms and dads use the saying “just like that” when they describe how fast their kids grow up. In fact, if you scroll through social media, you will probably run across that phrase at least once, maybe on the first or last day of school, on someone’s wedding day or graduation. Anyway, that’s how the song was born.

Then in 2020, when school went online, it seemed like the perfect year to release this song. We thought this could be a special way to honor this year’s Senior “Corona Class” who would miss out on many important events during the last half of their senior year.

In the music video, you may see some familiar faces! We had 36 families provide “before and after” pics of their graduates. Thank you so much for being a part of this project. We hope the song and video are a special keepsake for you and your graduate to show their kids and grandkids one day!
